   Vitebsk State Technological University is an entire academic-scientific-production complex, which trains specialists with higher education for the light industry and other branches of national economy, prepares highly qualified scientific personnel, provides qualification improvement and employees retraining in different spheres, implements fundamental and applied scientific research on broad aspects, manufactures light industry products, develops international cooperation with higher educational establishments and enterprises. The University provides the high level of professional training of specialists.

   Today the University is headed by Valery Bashmetov, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, honoured worker in educational sphere of Belarus, a member of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.

Why is it interesting and prestigious to study at Vitebsk State Technological University?

VSTU is regarded as one of the best universities in Belarus in the organization of students' scientific work. Over 80 percent of the students are involved in it.
   The University has international recognition. It cooperates with Moscow State Textile University, Moscow State University of Design and Technology, St. Petersburg University of Technology and Design, Zelenogursk University (Poland), Copernicus University in Toruni (Poland), with Economic Faculty of Belgrade University, South-Russian University of Economy and Service, Namangansk Engineering-Economic Institute, and others.
   The University has modern material base for carrying out health-improvement and sports events and for training first-class sportsmen.
   45 masters of sport, 4 international masters of sport graduated from the University during the period of its existence. 7 students took part in the Olympic Games and world championships.
   The main scientific directions correspond to the leading trends of scientific and technical activity in the Republic of Belarus and specialists training profile and include fundamental and applied researches. Among the outcomes of the researches and scientists' elaboration are the serial productions of automated sewing machines, pneumatic spinning machine, equipment for footwear and new types of yarn and threads. The new technologies have already been devised to organize manufacture of soft furnishings, treatment and preventive tights and etc. Such researches as «New Ways of Yarn Formation», «New Kinds of Sewing Equipment with Microprocessor Control», «Knitted Goods for Medical Purposes», «Technologies and Equipment for Industrial Waste Reprocessing», «New Types of Energy-Saving Equipment», and «Medical Goods for Special Purpose» are of universal importance. The University is the leading executor of branch and scientific and technical program «New Technologies and Equipment for Light Industry».

What facilities does the University offer?

   The University is situated in one of the main streets of Vitebsk. It represents educational research and production complex which consists of 7 faculties (Mechanical Technological Faculty, The Faculty of Artistic Design and Technology, The Faculty of Design and Technology, The Faculty of Economics, Correspondence Faculty, Career-Guidance and Preparatory Faculty, The Faculty of Improvement of Professional Skill and Retraining of Personnel), library, post-graduate course.
   The efforts of the University's staff are aimed at involving computers into the academic process and research work. There is a computer centre there. Internet resources are used in the academic process and research work. The University has its own website.

Terms of admission of citizens of foreign states to educational establishment «Vitebsk State Technolodical University»
(EE «VSTU»)

   EE «VSTU» admits the citizens of foreign states whose received education corresponds to general secondary education or secondary specialized education in the Republic of Belarus, or to the education necessary for taking a post-graduate course leading to obtaining a Master's degree.
   The citizens of foreign states can enter EE «VSTU» on the basis of contracts envisaging the payment of tuition fees either by individuals or by legal entities.
   For being enrolled as a candidate for studying, the applicant is to submit to the Enrolment Board during the period from May 1st to October 15th the following documents:

• passport with Belarus entry visa;
• personal application form of the candidate for studying where the code and full name of the speciality chosen are stated (the original of the form in Russian or Belarussian and either in English, or in French, or in German, or in Arabic, or in Spanish);
• certificate of complete secondary education where the subjects studied, the marks received, and general progress are indicated (notarially certified copy together with its notarially certified translation into Russian);
• medical certificate proving that the candidate has no contra-indications for studying in the Republic of Belarus, the result of the AIDS test being a must (the original of the document together with its notarially certified translation into Russian);
• medical insurance policy;
• birth certificate (notarially certified copy together with its notarially certified translation into Russian);
• 6 photos 4x6 cm;
• document proving the candidate's knowledge of the language of studies and of the subjects necessary for obtaining the speciality chosen (the original of the document together with its translation into Russian authenticated by the educational establishment which issued the document). Failing to submit the document, the candidate can be enrolled for the full course of studies only in case the appropriate level of the candidate's knowledge is confirmed by the committee set up by the order of Rector or after the candidate finishes the Preparatory Department of EE «VSTU» or of any other higher educational establishment of the Republic of Belarus or the Russian Federation;
• list of the published works (if there are any).

   Visa support for the candidates is provided by the University in coordination with the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus.
   The tuition fee is fixed according to the contract and is stated in the certificate signed by both parties.

Preparatory department for foreign students

   The candidates for studying in EE «VSTU» who do not have either the appropriate level of knowledge of the language of studies or corresponding grounding in necessary subjects are admitted to the Preparatory Department attached to the University for the term of up to 1 year in order to study the Russian language and profile subjects in accordance with the speciality chosen on the basis of their request applications and contracts envisaging payment of the full tuition fee.
   In case of the successful completion of the Preparatory Department course, the candidate receives the certificate and is enrolled as a first-year student of the faculty chosen.
   The citizens of foreign states who failed to acquire the knowledge necessary for studying in EE «VSTU» are sent down; they are to leave the territory of the Republic of Belarus. In individual cases, according to the resolution of Rector, the citizens of foreign states are permitted to repeat the course of studies at the Preparatory Department.
   The citizens of foreign states study according to the curricula and syllabi of EE «VSTU». Having completed the course of studies successfully, the foreign students receive diplomas (certificates) of the set standards.

Vitebsk Overview

   The city of Vitebsk is situated in a picturesque place in the northeast of Belarus where the Vitba and the Luchosa flow into the Western Dvina. Vitebsk is an ancient city, with magnificent architectural monuments; it is the native land of such world-famous painters as Yuri Pan and Mark Chagall. The Vitebsk Academic Drama Theater named after Y. Kolas stages plays that have received worldwide recognition among foreign spectators. Numerous cinemas, museums, exhibition halls, parks, and botanical gardens give everybody the opportunity not to spend their leisure time in vain.
   The climate of Vitebsk is moderately continental. Summer lasts for almost four months. At the end of September autumn comes. Winter begins in the middle of November when the average daily air temperature falls below 0?C. The winter in Belarus is characterized by changing periods of thaw and frost; there is always a lot of snow. Spring comes in March when the average daily air temperature is again above zero and the number of fine sunny days increases.
   There are Orthodox and Catholic churches in Vitebsk.
   The citizens of Vitebsk, as well as all Belarussians, are famous for being benevolent, friendly, and peace-loving in their relations with other peoples. Stable social-political situation is customary for Belarus.
   In Vitebsk, there is a modern railway station, a bus terminal, and an airport.
